One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was built around 350 BC as a tomb for Mausolos, satrap of Caria — a Persian-controlled territory on the Aegean coast of what is now Turkey. The structure was so architecturally celebrated that his name became the root word for every monumental tomb built since. It survived largely intact through medieval times before being systematically dismantled by the Knights of St. John of Rhodes in the early 15th century, its stone repurposed for the fortification of Bodrum Castle.
The Solomon Islands has issued dozens of these fractional gold pieces under licensing arrangements, pairing a Commonwealth issuer with ancient world subjects — a purely commercial program with no domestic monetary relevance.
