Fiji's Reserve Bank issued a wave of small-format gold pieces around 2010–2012 under licensing arrangements that allowed foreign natural landmarks to appear on Pacific island coinage — a common revenue mechanism for smaller sovereign mints with limited domestic collector markets. The Matterhorn issue is one of several in this series, each targeting European buyers through novelty and low gold content rather than numismatic depth.

At 0.585 fineness and half a gram, the actual gold value is negligible. These were sold at a steep premium to melt, almost entirely through television shopping channels and mail-order catalogs in Germany and Switzerland.
