Issued to mark the 1976 Montreal Olympics — the first Summer Games held in Canada — this was part of a seven-series commemorative program that became one of the most ambitious coin fundraising schemes in Olympic history. The Royal Canadian Mint sold the sets internationally through a subscription model, aiming to offset construction costs for Montreal's notoriously over-budget venues. The program ultimately raised around $250 million CAD, though the Games themselves still left Quebec carrying debt for decades.
