Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse depicts a highly detailed relief rendition of the Soviet Luna 9 spacecraft in the central field, shown in three-quarter perspective with its cylindrical body, antenna arrays, and instrument modules rendered with fine mechanical precision. Above and behind the spacecraft, a small globe of the Earth is shown in the upper field. In the lower portion of the coin, the cratered lunar surface is depicted in low relief. The curved legend MOON LANDING LUNA 9 arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 10 DOLLARS appears in the lower right field, all in raised Latin characters.

Aanvullende informatie

Luna 9 was the Soviet probe that achieved the first successful soft landing on the Moon in February 1966, transmitting the first photographs taken from the lunar surface — images that immediately disproved the theory that the Moon's surface was covered in deep, ship-swallowing dust. Niue, a self-governing island territory in free association with New Zealand, began issuing commemorative silver rounds through licensed programs in the early 1990s, with the space exploration series among the first.

The KM#70 attribution places this within a documented sequence, though Niue's commemorative output from this period was primarily sold to collectors rather than circulated on the island itself.
