The Lorelei is a Rhine river slate rock near Sankt Goarshausen whose dangerous currents claimed enough ships that local legend eventually invented a siren to explain the wrecks. Heinrich Heine's 1824 poem fixed that figure permanently in German romantic consciousness, and it has been a subject of commemorative issues well outside German jurisdiction ever since.
