The Holy Dormition Sviatohirsk Lavra, a cave monastery carved into chalk cliffs above the Siverskyi Donets river in eastern Ukraine, was suppressed under Soviet rule and its monks dispersed. It was returned to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in 1992 following independence, and the lavra status — the highest rank in Orthodox monasticism — was formally granted in 2004, just five years before this coin was issued.
Cook Islands was among several small Pacific issuers contracted heavily during the 2000s to produce themed gold miniatures for the European collector market. The actual distribution chain ran almost entirely through Ukrainian and Russian numismatic dealers.
