Part of the Royal Canadian Mint's ongoing "Celebrating Canada's Sports" series, this issue was released ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi — a moment of particular national investment given Canada's back-to-back hockey gold medals in Vancouver four years prior. The .9999 fine silver specification, rather than the more common .999, reflects the RCM's push during this period to position its collector issues against bullion-grade rivals.
