HMS Investigator completed the first circumnavigation of Australia under Matthew Flinders between 1801 and 1803, though the voyage ended badly — the ship was found so worm-riddled at Port Jackson that she was condemned as unseaworthy. Flinders transferred to HMS Porpoise, which promptly wrecked on a reef. He eventually reached Mauritius aboard a small schooner, where the French governor imprisoned him for nearly seven years despite the two nations being nominally at peace.
Fiji's connection to the voyage is cartographic rather than biographical — Flinders charted portions of the Pacific approaches relevant to regional navigation. Flinders died in 1814, the day after his account of the voyage was finally published.
