Pitcairn issued this coin under authority delegated through the British Crown, though the island's actual population at the time hovered around fifty people — making it one of the smallest jurisdictions anywhere to produce its own numismatic program. The Bounty connection is unavoidable: Fletcher Christian's mutineers burned the ship in Bounty Bay in January 1790 to prevent detection, and their descendants still constitute the majority of Pitcairn's population today.
The KM#48 entry sits in a long run of Pitcairn gold issues aimed squarely at the collector market, with no meaningful circulation ever intended.
