HMAS Sydney's loss on 19 November 1941 — with all 645 men aboard — remains Australia's worst naval disaster. She was sunk in a mutually destructive engagement with the German auxiliary cruiser HSK Kormoran off the Western Australian coast, and because no Australians survived, the exact sequence of events was disputed for decades. The two wrecks were not located until 2008, lying roughly 12 nautical miles apart.
