Part of a broader commemorative program tied to the 250th anniversary of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, this miniature gold issue was produced for the collector market rather than any circulating purpose. The Hermitage, founded by Catherine the Great in 1764, opened its Winter Palace collections to the public only in 1852 — nearly a century after its establishment.
