Henry III's reign saw England's first gold coinage since the Anglo-Saxon period — the gold penny of 1257, struck at roughly 45 grains and valued at 20 silver pennies. It failed almost immediately, the public refusing it because the exchange rate bore no relation to the metal's actual market value, and the issue was abandoned within two years.
