Above the waterline rises a relief depiction of the volcanic peaks of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park against a dark sky, with stylized lava formations in the lower field. The arc legend HAWAII VOLCANOES National Park appears at the top of the field, flanked by a small floral motif. | Additional information |
Cook Islands ran an extensive commemorative program throughout the 1990s, licensing its sovereignty to issue collector coins with virtually no connection to the islands themselves. This piece is a product of that arrangement — produced for the international numismatic market, almost certainly struck by a European contract mint, and never intended to circulate anywhere near Rarotonga.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, a decade before this issue.
