The Pitcairn Islands have no mint of their own and no domestic economy to speak of — the permanent population has rarely exceeded fifty people since the Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian companions settled there in 1790. Coins issued in Pitcairn's name are struck under contract and sold entirely to the collector market, the island government deriving a modest but meaningful revenue from the arrangement.

HMS Bounty herself never actually reached Pitcairn. Fletcher Christian burned the ship in Bounty Bay shortly after landing, partly to prevent desertion and partly to eliminate any visible evidence of their location.
