| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Sierra Leone occupies the central field, depicting a shield with a lion passant and three torches, supported by two lions rampant on either side, with two palm trees rising behind the shield. A scroll below bears the national motto in the legend UNITY FREEDOM JUSTICE. The circular legend REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE arcs around the upper periphery, while the date 1997 appears in the lower field. The small mint mark PM for Pobjoy Mint is visible at the lower left of the shield. |

| Additional information |
Issued to mark the 50th wedding anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1997, this is one of hundreds of nearly identical commemorative crowns struck in sterling silver by the Pobjoy Mint on behalf of small Commonwealth nations during this period. Sierra Leone had no practical monetary relationship with this denomination — the coin never circulated.
