Additional information

Fuleco was the official mascot of the 2014 FIFA World Cup held in Brazil — an armadillo species chosen partly to raise awareness of the three-banded armadillo, listed as vulnerable due to habitat loss in Brazil's Caatinga region. Cook Islands issued a substantial run of FIFA-licensed collector coins in the lead-up to 2014, this being one of several denominations in that series. The conservation angle was genuine; the three-banded armadillo had briefly become locally extinct in parts of its range before small population recoveries were recorded.
