The VOC — the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie — was granted its charter by the States-General of the Dutch Republic in 1602, becoming arguably the first multinational corporation in history and the first company to issue public stock. At its peak it employed nearly 50,000 people and maintained a private army. The porcelain inset references directly the trade that made the VOC its early fortune: Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, shipped through Batavia in quantities that reshaped European decorative tastes for over a century.
The Cook Islands has issued extensively in this novelty-inset format since the early 2010s, with porcelain among the more technically demanding inserts to produce without cracking during the striking process.
