The dugong (Dugong dugon) holds protected status across much of its range under CITES Appendix I, and Solomon Islands waters remain one of the few Pacific habitats where viable populations still exist. This coin was issued under the broader wildlife conservation series that numerous Pacific island mints leveraged aggressively in the 2000s and early 2010s — collector-market issues with minimal domestic circulation, produced largely for the European and Asian numismatic trade.
