Additional information

Issued to mark the quincentenary of Columbus's 1492 landfall, which the Bahamas had particular claim to commemorate — San Salvador Island, within Bahamian territory, is among the most credible candidates for the first landsite, though the exact location remains disputed by historians and navigators. The quincentenary itself was politically charged across the Americas, with indigenous advocacy groups successfully pressuring several governments to reframe official commemorations away from "discovery" language entirely.

The Bahamas Central Bank proceeded with the traditional framing regardless.
