The Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned in December 1997 after 44 years of service — a decision made by the Major government on cost grounds and not reversed by Blair, despite considerable royal displeasure reported at the time. Elizabeth II and Prince Philip had used Britannia for their 1953 honeymoon voyage to Tonga and throughout their marriage for both state and private travel, making it a genuine biographical thread across the sixty years this coin commemorates. The Cayman Islands, as a British Overseas Territory, issued commemorative silver with some regularity through the Royal Mint during this period.
