Released as part of the Royal Canadian Mint's licensing agreement with Warner Bros. for the DC Extended Universe film release, this piece was issued concurrent with the theatrical debut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in March 2016. The RCM pursued entertainment licensing aggressively through this period, producing numbered collector issues tied directly to film release windows — a revenue strategy that proved profitable enough to expand into multiple subsequent DC and other franchise agreements.
Struck in four-nines fine silver, a purity specification the RCM adopted as a house standard well above the .999 threshold used by most sovereign mints.
