This piece belongs to a wave of commemorative silver issues released around the 60th anniversary of the Normandy landings in 2004. The British Virgin Islands, as a Crown dependency, issued extensively through the Pobjoy Mint during this period — producing themed series that circulated freely among collectors but never approached the islands themselves. The D-Day pilot subcategory acknowledges the critical role of Allied air superiority in suppressing German coastal defenses and providing cover for the assault fleet on 6 June 1944, without which the amphibious landings would have faced considerably heavier opposition.
