The original Coenwulf penny — struck in gold at Canterbury around 805 AD and sold at auction in 2006 for £230,000 — remains the most valuable British coin ever sold and the only known example of its type. This issue commemorates that singular object. The 45mm diameter against a 0.311g gold weight means the planchet is struck as a thin wide disc, a deliberate format choice to maximize surface area for the design while using the minimum legally permissible gold content for a bullion-backed commemorative.
