Part of a widely distributed "Seven Wonders of the World" bullion series issued through the late 2000s, this piece uses Solomon Islands' nominal sovereignty purely as a licensing mechanism — the islands had no economic or political connection to the subject matter. Chichén Itzá had been named one of the New Seven Wonders following the 2007 global poll organized by the New Seven Wonders Foundation, a Swiss private entity whose methodology drew considerable criticism from UNESCO.
One-gram gold pieces in this format were produced in bulk for the collector and gift market, not monetary circulation.
