Barbados gained independence in 1966 but retained the Eastern Caribbean Currency Authority for its monetary affairs until 1973, when the Central Bank of Barbados was established as a fully sovereign institution. This 1982 proof issue falls within the early years of that independent banking history, during a period when Caribbean nations routinely contracted with foreign mints — in Barbados's case, the Franklin Mint handled much of this collector output, producing runs calibrated more for the international numismatic market than for domestic circulation.
KM#34a distinguishes the silver proof from the base-metal currency strike, a separation made almost immediately upon the series being introduced.
