Above the portal, the Gallery of Kings is rendered with a row of standing royal figures in individual niches. One of fourteen pieces in a series commemorating Gothic cathedrals, this Niuean issue was struck the same year a major restoration campaign at Notre-Dame de Paris was quietly underway — five years before the April 2019 fire that destroyed the spire and much of the roof. Coins from this series acquired a retrospective significance they were never designed to carry.
