Obverse description Right-facing crowned and draped effigy of Queen Elizabeth II set within a circular beaded border at center of the square flan. The legend ELIZABETH II runs along the left arc and NIUE along the upper arc, with 10 DOLLARS inscribed vertically on the right side of the border. The date 2014 appears in the lower field beneath the portrait. The portrait is rendered in fine relief against a frosted square field, characteristic of the Ian Rank-Broadley style.

Reverse description Highly detailed high-relief depiction of the western facade of Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, focusing on the central portal (Portal of the Last Judgment) with its elaborately carved tympanum featuring Christ in Majesty surrounded by angels and saints in the mandorla, flanked by sculptural figures in the archivolts. Above the portal, the Gallery of Kings is rendered with a row of standing royal figures in individual niches. The architectural elements — including Gothic arches, colonettes, and decorative moldings — are rendered with exceptional sculptural precision across the square silver flan, giving the design a three-dimensional quality reminiscent of bas-relief architectural modeling.

Additional information

One of fourteen pieces in a series commemorating Gothic cathedrals, this Niuean issue was struck the same year a major restoration campaign at Notre-Dame de Paris was quietly underway — five years before the April 2019 fire that destroyed the spire and much of the roof. Coins from this series acquired a retrospective significance they were never designed to carry.
