Brimstone Hill Fortress on St. Kitts was built largely by enslaved Africans under British military direction over nearly a century, beginning in the 1690s. The French captured it in 1782 after a month-long siege — one of the few times the fortification fell — before Britain regained St. Kitts under the Treaty of Paris the following year. UNESCO designated the site a World Heritage Site in 1999.
