Seventeen Australians died; enemy casualties numbered in the hundreds. The battle became the defining engagement of Australia's Vietnam commitment, though the government suppressed full public acknowledgment for years — South Vietnamese authorities initially blocked the award of unit citations, fearing diplomatic complications.
