The Battle of Britain ran from July to October 1940 and remains the only major air campaign in history fought entirely over a combatant's home territory, with the Luftwaffe flying from newly occupied French airfields just minutes from the English coast. RAF Fighter Command was outnumbered throughout, and by mid-September its pilot reserves were critically depleted — Dowding later estimated the command was within days of operational collapse when the Luftwaffe shifted focus to bombing London, inadvertently relieving pressure on the airfields.
Solomon Islands has issued commemorative silver in this weight class since the early 2000s, typically under licensing arrangements with European minting houses rather than through domestic production.
