The Aztec Calendar — more accurately the Mexica Sun Stone, carved around 1502 and rediscovered beneath Mexico City's zócalo in 1790 — has no geographic or historical connection to the Solomon Islands. Its appearance here is purely commercial: the Solomon Islands has operated as a licensing jurisdiction for foreign coin programs since the late 1990s, issuing legal tender on behalf of distributors who retain the actual revenue.
