This fractional issue is part of a long-running licensing arrangement through which the Solomon Islands lends its sovereign authority to bullion programs it has no domestic capacity to strike — the coins are produced in Australia, for the international collector and investor market, and would be unlikely to circulate in Honiara under any circumstances. At 0.5 grams of .9999 fine gold, the actual metal value hovers near the floor of what modern refining technology can reliably strike without loss of definition.
