Additional information

The Australasian Antarctic Expedition of 1911–14, led by Douglas Mawson, is one of the most scientifically productive — and brutally punishing — polar expeditions ever mounted. Mawson survived the return journey to base only after both of his sledging companions died, one from hypervitaminosis A after eating husky liver, the other falling into a crevasse with most of the food supply. He made it back to Commonwealth Bay to watch his ship disappear over the horizon, forcing a second winter on the ice.

Niue has issued commemoratives under New Zealand currency arrangements since 1972, making it a legally valid issuer despite a population under 2,000.
