Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse depicts a dramatic high-relief scene of the assassination attempt on SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich in Prague on 27 May 1942. A detailed rendering of Heydrich's Mercedes-Benz open-top staff car, bearing the SS licence plate SS-3, occupies the central field, with the moment of the grenade explosion illustrated behind the vehicle. A figure of one of the Czechoslovak paratroopers is shown in action above and to the right of the car. The curved legend ATENTÁT NA HEYDRICHA arcs along the upper periphery, while the bold inscription PRAHA is displayed prominently in the lower field with enamelled black lettering. The overall composition conveys the historical gravity and urgency of Operation Anthropoid.

Aanvullende informatie

Reinhard Heydrich — architect of the Wannsee Conference protocols and Reichsprotektor of Bohemia and Moravia — was fatally wounded on 27 May 1942 when Czech and Slovak paratroopers trained by the SOE ambushed his open-topped Mercedes in Prague. He died of his wounds eight days later. The operation, codenamed Anthropoid, remains one of the only successful assassinations of a senior Nazi official during the war.

The Nazi reprisals were catastrophic: the villages of Lidice and Ležáky were obliterated, and over 1,300 Czechs were killed in the weeks that followed.
