The Acts of Union 1800 merged the Kingdom of Great Britain with the Kingdom of Ireland into the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, effective 1 January 1801 — pushed through Westminster and the Dublin Parliament partly through the distribution of peerages and cash payments to reluctant Irish MPs. Ireland lost its separate parliament, a grievance that fed directly into the republican movements of the following century.
