Fiji's 2002 banknote series arrived at an awkward political moment — the country had been suspended from the Commonwealth following the George Speight coup attempt of May 2000, which briefly held Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry hostage. The Reserve Bank pressed ahead with routine note production regardless, and De La Rue continued fulfilling the contract without interruption. Monetary continuity was one of the few stable institutions during that period.
P#106 carries only a windowed security thread and a watermark as primary security features — relatively lean for a note printed into the early 2000s, when polymer substrates and more complex foil elements were already common across Pacific island issuers.
