Additional information

Fiji has no particular connection to Michelangelo or the Sistine Chapel ceiling, completed in 1512 — the 500th anniversary hook is the entire justification for this coin's existence. The Reserve Bank of Fiji was one of dozens of small-island issuers that contracted with European private mints during the 2000s and 2010s to produce high-margin commemoratives aimed squarely at the collector market, never intended for circulation.

The selective gold plating technique applied here was a selling point aggressively marketed across this wave of issues.
