Additional information

Australia's Lunar coin program, initiated by the Perth Mint in 1996, prompted the Royal Australian Mint to launch its own competing Lunar series — a point of some institutional rivalry between the two Canberra and Perth operations. The 2016 Monkey issue falls within RAM's smaller-format gold proof subset, struck in quantities deliberately kept low to support secondary market premiums.

The Monkey sits ninth in the twelve-year zodiac cycle RAM was working through at this point.
