The Year of the Goat issue was part of Perth Mint's Lunar Series I, which ran from 1996 through 2007, each year's release timed precisely to the Chinese lunisolar calendar cycle. The 2003 goat year — technically the Year of the Ram or Sheep depending on translation, a distinction Chinese numismatic communities still argue — saw strong demand from Southeast Asian collectors, pushing mintages on the larger formats close to their stated limits. Perth's 311-gram ten-ounce coins from this series have appreciated considerably as complete Lunar I sets become harder to assemble.
