Perth Mint's annual lunar bullion series traces its commercial origins to 1996, when the mint quietly repositioned itself as a private enterprise under the Gold Corporation umbrella — technically owned by the Western Australian government but operating with full commercial independence from the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra. The Year of the Dog falls in the second full rotation of the twelve-year lunar cycle, the first having concluded in 2007. Coins from the second series introduced the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy and progressively refined the frosted relief work that the Perth Mint's diesinkers had been developing since the late 1990s.
