Obverse description The fourth portrait effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, faces right wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. The Queen's mature likeness is rendered in fine detail, with pearl drop earring visible at the neck. The legend NEW ZEALAND ELIZABETH II arcs around the upper periphery, with the regnal numeral II at lower right and the date 2003 at lower centre; the engraver's initials IRB appear below the truncation of the neck.

Reverse description The reverse features a dramatic three-dimensional depiction of the One Ring from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, rendered in perspective as an angled hoop dominating the field. The band of the ring bears the Black Speech inscription engraved in Tengwar script, faithfully reproducing the Ring-inscription as conceived by Tolkien. The field surrounding the ring is filled with further flowing Tengwar script lettering, creating an immersive decorative effect. The denomination $10 appears in bold Latin numerals at the centre of the ring's opening. The design commemorates the conclusion of Peter Jackson's film trilogy, for which New Zealand served as the filming location.
