Australia's Millennium coin program was one of the most ambitious bimetallic series the Royal Australian Mint had undertaken to that point, spanning three themes — Past, Present, and Future — released across 1999 and 2000. The copper centre was a deliberate compositional choice, meant to echo the pre-decimal copper coinage that had circulated through the country's earlier decades.

KM#423 is the opening piece in that trilogy.
