The dynamic, highly sculptural composition is framed by an ornate border of spiralling koru motifs in the Maori decorative tradition, filling the entire field with intricate curvilinear patterning. The legend TEN DOLLARS • TEKAU TARA arcs along the upper border, while KUPE - THE GREAT NAVIGATOR is inscribed along the lower border. The design conveys the mythological confrontation between Kupe and the great octopus Te Wheke-a-Muturangi, central to the Maori account of the discovery of Aotearoa New Zealand. |
