Reverse description The central field depicts Kupe, the legendary Polynesian navigator of Maori tradition, rendered as a powerful tattooed warrior adorned with traditional ta moko body markings, wielding a weapon aloft in his right hand while entwined in the massive tentacles of a giant octopus. The dynamic, highly sculptural composition is framed by an ornate border of spiralling koru motifs in the Maori decorative tradition, filling the entire field with intricate curvilinear patterning. The legend TEN DOLLARS • TEKAU TARA arcs along the upper border, while KUPE - THE GREAT NAVIGATOR is inscribed along the lower border. The design conveys the mythological confrontation between Kupe and the great octopus Te Wheke-a-Muturangi, central to the Maori account of the discovery of Aotearoa New Zealand.
