Reverse description A highly detailed relief depiction of a Great Spotted Kiwi (Apteryx haastii) shown in left profile, its long slender bill pointed downward and its richly textured plumage rendered with fine engraving. The bird is set against a naturalistic background of rugged alpine terrain, with selective colour treatment applied to the lower field to evoke rocky ground. The denomination $10 appears in the upper field within an oval cartouche, and the legend GREAT SPOTTED KIWI APTERYX HAASTII is inscribed around the periphery of the oval flan.

Additional information

New Zealand's $10 denomination sits at an awkward commercial register — too small a gold weight to attract serious bullion buyers, too tied to a specific wildlife subject to function as a generic investment piece. The Great Spotted Kiwi, Apteryx haastii, is the largest of the three kiwi species and is restricted almost entirely to the northern and western ranges of the South Island, where DOC estimates place the wild population at roughly 16,000 birds. Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II first appeared on Commonwealth coinage in 1998.
