Reg Mombassa — born Chris O'Doherty — is better known as a founding member of the band Mental As Anything and the designer behind the aggressively vernacular Mambo Graphics aesthetic that defined a particular strain of Australian visual culture through the 1980s and 1990s. His inclusion in the Royal Australian Mint's rotating artist series for the Gold Kangaroo program was a genuinely unexpected choice, importing street-inflected commercial art into a bullion context more accustomed to classical wildlife illustration.
The 3.11 g specification places this squarely in the one-tenth troy ounce tier of the Kangaroo series, first introduced in 1986.
