The Australian Kookaburra series launched in 1990 as one of Perth Mint's earliest bullion programs, and the 10-dollar kilogram denomination was added to capture institutional buyers unwilling to stack smaller rounds. Each year's reverse design changes — a deliberate policy decision made to drive collector demand on top of the base silver value, a strategy Perth had already tested successfully with the Lunar series.

KM#666 and KM#1761 reference two distinct reverse designs struck across the 2002 and 2003 calendar years under the same denomination and portrait pairing.
