The Australian Koala silver bullion series launched in 2007, positioning Perth Mint directly against the established Kookaburra series it had produced since 1990. The decision to run two competing large-format silver bullion programs simultaneously was commercially aggressive — the Koala's annual design rotation was designed explicitly to drive year-on-year collector demand, a strategy Perth had already proven successful with the Lunar series.
The 10-ounce format was among the heaviest struck in the inaugural years of the program, requiring dedicated handling infrastructure at the mint's bullion facility in East Perth.
