Shirley Strickland de la Hunty won seven Olympic medals across three Games — 1948, 1952, and 1956 — making her one of the most decorated track and field athletes Australia had produced to that point. This coin was issued as part of the Royal Australian Mint's Atlanta Olympics series, timed to the 1996 Centennial Games. The frosted proof finish on this denomination was applied selectively across the series, not uniformly, and collector demand has historically been stronger for the athletes who later had their records revised — Strickland's 1948 bronze in the 200m was reclassified from a disqualification outcome decades after the fact.
