Issued under the United Nations Environment Programme's partnership with national mints in the early 1990s, this piece belongs to a broader wave of UNEP-aligned conservation coinage that the Royal Australian Mint produced as the Convention on Biological Diversity was being finalized — it opened for signature at Rio in June 1992, just months before this coin's release year. The Palm Cockatoo, endemic to Cape York Peninsula and New Guinea, was a pointed choice: its dependence on old-growth hollow trees made it a direct index species for logging pressure in Queensland at the time.
